2022 World Travel Awards
The Mother City did South Africa proud at the 2022 World Travel Awards, bringing home top position in five categories. The city as a whole was hailed as Africa's Leading City Destination of the Year while Mouille Point's Silo Hotel was declared the continent's leading luxury hotel and Africa's leading design hotel. Cape Town International Airport scooped the "Africa's Leading Airport" award, while Table Mountain deservedly brought home the title of Africa's Leading Attraction - beating out icons like the V&A Waterfront and the Pyramids of Giza. On the topic of Cape Town International Airport, the facility also received the title of "Best Airport in Africa" at the 2022 Skytrax World Airport Awards.
The World Travel Awards are intended to acknowledge and celebrate achievements within the global travel and tourism industry. It's worth noting that it's not the first time Cape Town has won the accolade of Africa's Leading City. in 2021, Cape Town also brought home the same title - as well as that of "World's Leading Festival and Event Destination".
Other notable accolades
The inaugural Halal Travel Awards were held in June 2022 and Cape Town was named "The Most Promising Muslim-friendly City Destination of the Year". The city was recognised for its tireless work in building capacity to welcome tourists to the city and its commitment to promoting Halal Awareness.
Britain's The Telegraph conducted an independent destination study in the aftermath of the pandemic and has named Cape Town the third-best city on earth, beaten only by Barcelona and Sydney.
Recently, Cape Town Tourism developed an immersive game-style digital platform called Find Your Freedom, which scooped up no less than four awards at the 10th annual Supersonic New Generation Awards. These included bronze awards in the Most Viral Campaign, Most Innovative Gamification Campaign, Best Use of Technical Innovation and Best Revenue Generating Marketing Campaign or Event categories.
Real estate-related awards
Cape Town has recently been ranked fifth on Savills World Cities Prime Residential Index. Savills is a British real estate services company based in London, and its Residential Index highlights prime capital growth forecasts and values. This puts Cape Town in the spotlight as a desirable investment for both local and international investors.
Ongoing drive for improvement
City of Cape Town officials are on an ongoing drive to make life better for its residents. The city's mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced an ambitious plan to provide Cape Town residents with protection from the first four stages of Eskom's loadshedding within three years. Hill-Lewis has also paved the way for businesses - and later residents - to be paid cash for paying the excess power generated in their homes to Cape Town's grid. In short, Cape Town is a city serious about putting an end to the scourge of loadshedding.
